Cynthia Lawrence is a regular guest of leading opera companies around the world, including the Metropolitan Opera (Roxanne in Cyrano de Bergerac, Dolly in Sly, Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly (where she worked with the late director Anthony Minghella), and Rosalinda in Die Fledermaus); Lyric Opera of Chicago (Lavinia in Mourning Becomes Electra, Elettra in Idomeneo, the Italian Singer in Strauss’s Capriccio, Musetta in La Boheme, Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito, Micaela in Carmen, Fiordiligi in Cosi fan Tutte); Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin, New Israeli Opera, Opera Pacific, and Opera Colorado (Lady Macbeth in Verdi’s Macbeth).
Ms. Lawrence’s 2007 – 2008 season includes appearances as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera with Minnesota Opera, Tosca with Vancouver Opera and at Royal Albert Hall in London, Lady Macbeth at the Metropolitan Opera, and Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly with Opera Carolina. Ms. Lawrence also made a gala concert appearance with Ben Heppner in Andrea Chenier at the Cultur Arte de Puerto Rico. In the 2008-2009 season, Ms. Lawrence’s engagements include a recital in Kiev, Ukraine, and a concert version of Tosca with Opera Fairbanks.
Other highlights include: Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (Musetta); Prague’s National Theater (Vitellia in La Clemenza di Tito); Grand Theatre de Geneva, Minnesota Opera (Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro); New York City Opera (Rosalinda, Cio-Cio-San, Musetta), and Festival de Santander (Donna Anna in Don Giovanni). Ms. Lawrence has had the pleasure of singing Tosca, one of her favorite roles, with the Metropolitan Opera, Atlanta Opera, Portland Opera, and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. She has also sung Elettra in Idomeneo at Washington National Opera. In September 2005 she joined a star-studded cast in opening the new Ellie Caulkins Opera House in Denver; and sang three concerts with long-time colleague Luciano Pavarotti in Tulsa, the Hollywood Bowl, and Fort Lauderdale.
Ms. Lawrence first attracted international attention in 1990 winning the International Concorso di Canto di Mozart vocal competition, exciting audiences at the Vienna Staatsoper, Paris and Rome with her performances of arias from Cosi fan Tutte and La Clemenza di Tito. She was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a recipient of the Birgit Nilsson Prize, and is an award recipient from the MacAllister Awards, the Stewart Awards, the Sullivan Awards, and the Pavarotti International Voice Competition.
Notable concert appearances by Ms. Lawrence include a staged version of Alban Berg’s beautiful and rarely performed Der Wein with the Grand Theatre Geneve; a solo recital with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romand, with Mo. A. Jordan in Martigny, Switzerland; Elettra in Idomeneo with the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Budapest; Strauss’ Vier Letzte Lieder and a recital of Mozart concert arias for the Colorado Music Festival; performances of Verdi’s Requiem in Utah; a concert tour of Italy with pianist/conductor Rudolf Buchbinder of Mozart Concert Aria; the Mozart Requiem at the Hollywood Bowl; a concert at the Ravinia Festival; Beethoven’s 9th with the Colorado University Chorale and performances with the Columbus Symphony of Rossini’s Stabat Mater.
Ms. Lawrence appeared in concert with Luciano Pavarotti over 70 times throughout the world, including cities such as Doha, Qatar; Modena, Spoletto and Alba, Italy; Montevideo, Buenos Aires and Concepcion, South America; Munster and Munich, Germany; Tokyo, Nagoya, Japan; Hong Kong, Shanghai, China; Kuala Lumpur, Pangkor Laut, Malaysia; Birmingham, Leeds Castle and London, England; Edmonton, Hamilton and Montreal, Canada; and The Hollywood Bowl, Las Vegas, Reno, Philadelphia, Detroit, St. Louis, Los Angeles, San Jose, Sacramento, Palm Desert, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, Columbus, Portland, Atlantic City, Denver, Miami, Rochester, Tulsa, and New York City. She has also appeared with him in two televised broadcasts on PBS: “Live from Lincoln Center” and “Pavarotti Plus!” in 1989, a live concert from Miami Beach in 1995, and on a 1995 PBS special “Pavarotti: My World.” Ms. Lawrence was also a member of the “Three Sopranos” who toured the world and released a commercial video and CD.
